Next Generation Science Standards - Engineering Review

The first public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is available for public review and feedback May 11 – June 1, 2012.  These standards are a cooperative effort of states to develop common standards that could be used as state science standards. Even though Minnesota is not scheduled to revise science standards until 2017-18, the state has been involved as a lead state in the development of the NGSS.  This involvement includes reviewing drafts of the standards and considering eventual adoption of the standards.  These standards and the foundations on which they are based are likely to the impetus for significant changes in science education.

Engineering is found as a fourth discipline of science along with Earth/Space Science, Life Science, and Physical science. While giving feedback on all areas, Minnesota, being a leader in engineering education, is working to provide focused feedback to help support continued growth in engineering education nationally.

We invite engineers, technicians, and others involved in engineering professions as well as educators interested in engineering to attend a special focus group meeting on Monday, May 21st from 5:00-7:00 at the Works Museum, a partner in engineering education.

The Works is located 9740 Grand Avenue, Bloomington, MN 55420.  Google Maps

Participants are encouraged to bring laptops and preview the standards at www.nextgenscience.org. If interested in attending, please register at http://www.bit.ly/ngssworks.Walk-ins are fine, but we would like to have an estimate on the number of participants.

If you have any questions, please contact Doug Paulson (doug.paulson@state.mn.us), STEM specialist, Minnesota Department of Education.
